The other night, I went grocery-shopping after work, and Andy texted me: "Any goodies for me hon?"
This simple question jolted me as I checked my grocery bag - organic oats, baby powder, plain yogurt, fresh milk, sweet potatos, wholemeal bread - EVERYTHING was for Baby Kai and NONE for the parents, ie. US.
This realisation that everything is about Baby Kai now gave me a minor fright.
I wonder if he would buy us $2000-wheelchairs and change our diapers when we are old and incontinent.
We love Baby Kai so much, it's scary. Do all parents feel the same way?
Yes, parents love their children very much and when there are few children or just one child, it's tempting to indulge in them/him, especially materially. I keep reminding myself to give him only the necessary and he needs to learn to earn what he wants. We also plan to have at least 2 children so that we learn to share resources.
ReplyDeleteI have no expectation that he'd look after us in old age so saving for a graceful retirement is a must. Anyway, I relocated overseas after marriage and am guilty of not being near my parents to care for them frequently. :(
